TRIKALA (TRIKKAION POLIS) OUR BEAUTIFUL TOWN

Trikala, built on the river Lithaios, is a timeless state, which has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times. The city’s strategic position and agricultural and industrial wealth have maintained its churches, mosques and modern mansions stand witness to the financial flourish, architectural heritage and industrial history of a city that is truly alive. The listed traditional neighborhood, several beautiful buildings that have been preserved and now house cultural and recreational activities, and noteworthy museums, promote the timeless historical and cultural features and auteurs of the city. Lithaios River

Over the last few years the old open waterway of the lithaios has been regulated and beautified with well attended banks, bonds and waterfalls. Its beautiful banks were planted with decorative trees and bushes that create a dense axis of green in the city center. The Lithaios is not just the son of Lethe, it is also the river of coolness, tranquility and relaxation.

The fortress of Trikala, which overlooks the city, was built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century on the ruins of the acropolis of ancient Trikki. The Byzantine castle was reinforced by the Ottomans and was the most powerful fortress in western Thessaly controlling passage to the Pindos mountain range and Epirus.

The clock on Frourio Hill is the architectural landmark of Trikala. In the middle of the 17th century the Ottomans had set up a clock with an enormous bell that could be heard at great distances. On the foundations of the old clock the present -day three-storey clock was built in 1936; it stands 33 meters high and has become the city’s symbol.

The Muslim mosque

 Was erected by Osman Han, who served as commander of the Prefecture of Trikala and was buried, in 1567, in neighboring octagonal mausoleum. The impressive mosque, which has been declared a monument of architectural heritage by UNESCO, was built by the famous architect of Greek descent, Mimar Siman, most probably in 1557. At present the mosque serves as an exhibition center.

Traditional neighborhood of Varousi

Varousi is the old listed neighborhood of Trikala, which spreads out over the eastern side of the Castle. It is used to be the city’s aristocratic quarters and retains the city’s traditional architectural style with narrow alleys, churches and many traditional houses and mansions that are preserved to this day, several of which have been maintained and restored, while many have been abandoned to decay.

METEORA

Meteora, on the northwestern tip of Thessaly’s plains, is an important geological phenomenon and one of the most important monuments of Christendom. The gigantic rocks, isolated from each other, some of which reach heights of 400 metres, are spread out in Kalabaka over an area of approximately thirty kilometers.
